The iconic sporting goods store in Ames is set to shut its doors by the end of August, ending a proud seven-decade legacy of outfitting adventurers.
A Farewell to a Local Favorite
Jax Outdoor Gear in Ames, a trusted name in outdoor equipment for 70 years, has announced it will close by the end of August. The announcement was made in a heartfelt Facebook post on May 13, describing the decision as the “end of an era.”
Located at 4723 Lincoln Way, the store has long served the Ames community with gear for camping, fishing, hunting, paddling, and climbing. It also carried surplus items and scout materials.
Property Sold, No New Location Planned
The closure comes after the property was sold to an undisclosed buyer. According to store manager Stacy Brothers, the team considered relocating within Ames, but those plans were not possible.
The store employs 32 people, most of whom are part-time. Known for their outdoor expertise, the staff remains committed to serving customers until the final day.
Celebrating a Rich History
Jax began in 1955 as Ames Surplus, a military surplus shop started by Marvin and Lola Quinlan. Originally a small operation, the store eventually expanded to over 21,000 square feet in two adjoining buildings.
In 1998, the Quinlans retired, passing the business to their son, Jim Quinlan. Jim had already opened a related store in Colorado and later rebranded Ames Surplus as Jax.
Gratitude to the Community
In their announcement, Jax thanked the people of Ames for their loyalty and support through the years. “We are thankful to our customers for their trust, support, and friendship,” the post read. “Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey.”
Jax Stores Still Open in Colorado
While the Ames store will close, Jax will continue to operate five locations in Colorado. The brand, founded by the Quinlan family, has a strong presence in the state.
Though the closing is bittersweet, staff at Jax are choosing to treat it as a celebration of their history. “We are trying to keep things as positive as possible — a celebration of life instead of a funeral,” said Brothers.
