Morro Bay State Park Crowned California’s Top Camping Spot in 2025 Survey

by Alice

California’s Morro Bay State Park has been named the state’s best camping destination, according to the Best of California’s State Parks 2025 survey. The California State Parks Foundation highlighted the park’s “coastal fog, kayaking adventures, and views of iconic Morro Rock” as factors that make it a truly unique camping experience. The park earned high marks for its tranquil estuary views, easy access to nature, and variety of outdoor activities.

This spring, the foundation invited the public to vote for their favorite state parks across 10 categories. Voters chose from among 280 park units, 15,000 campsites, and over 5,000 miles of trails within the California state park system.

Respondents praised Morro Bay’s campsite for its peaceful setting and dog-friendly environment, as well as its proximity to both the town and scenic nature walks. Doug Brand, one of the voters, described it as a place “surrounded by beauty, wildlife, great hiking, and the feeling of peace.”

Rachel Norton, executive director of the California State Parks Foundation, called Morro Bay State Park in San Luis Obispo County “one of the most stunning spots on the California coast.” She added, “Camping on the coast is a particularly unique and wonderful experience. That’s my thought on why people chose it.”
