Nature enthusiasts can finally start planning their getaway: reservations for the much-anticipated treehouses and yurts at Lake Michigan’s Ottawa Sands Park are now open.
Ottawa County officials announced that campers can book overnight stays at the Idema Explorers Camp beginning May 23, with reservations available on a rolling 12-month basis. The site, located just five minutes from the Lake Michigan shoreline, offers a unique and scenic retreat for visitors year-round.
The new campsite includes three fully equipped treehouses, five yurts, and 10 rustic tent pad sites — all designed for four-season use. The project was made possible by a generous $3.48 million donation from the Bill and Bea Idema Foundation.
Situated within the 345-acre Ottawa Sands Park, the campground is part of a broader initiative to enhance outdoor experiences in the area. The park, which reopened last year, now features several upgrades including a day-use parking area, modern restrooms, a 1.6-mile paved trail loop around the inland lake, accessible benches, and a universally accessible kayak launch with direct access to the Grand River.
A grand opening celebration for the Idema Explorers Camp is scheduled for May 22. The event will include official remarks at 3:30 p.m., followed by an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to tour the treehouses, yurts, and tent sites.
Each lodging option is tailored for comfort and convenience, offering something for every type of camper:
Treehouses
Available from April 1 to October 31, the treehouses accommodate up to six guests. Weekday prices range from $240 to $330 per night, while weekend stays cost between $270 and $390. Each unit includes electricity, heating, and air conditioning, plus a kitchenette with a microwave, mini-fridge, and single-cup coffee maker. Treehouses are also equipped with beds and linens, outdoor grills, shared fire pits, individual shower stalls in the campground restroom, free Wi-Fi, and access to on-site laundry facilities.
Yurts
Also available seasonally from April through October, the yurts offer a cozy alternative with weekday rates from $200 to $275 and weekend prices between $225 and $325. Yurts come furnished with basic amenities including electricity, heating, a kitchenette, beds with linens, propane grills, and complimentary Wi-Fi and laundry services.
Tent Sites
For those seeking a more traditional camping experience, the 10 tent pad sites offer a back-to-basics approach. Each site is equipped with a fire pit, picnic table, electrical access, free Wi-Fi, and access to laundry facilities. Tent sites are priced at $30 on weekdays and $40 on weekends.
Although the camp was originally slated for a spring 2024 opening, delays in launching the online reservation system, staffing, and finalizing operations pushed the date back. Now fully operational, Idema Explorers Camp is ready to welcome guests seeking an immersive natural escape close to Lake Michigan.
