Beach Wardens to Step Up Patrols Against Illegal Camping and Fires in Wexford This Summer

by Alice

As the tourist season begins, Wexford County Council is increasing patrols at popular beach spots like Curracloe and the Raven Woods to prevent illegal camping and fires. This move comes in response to concerns about wildfire risks, especially following a recent blaze at Tara Hill earlier this month.

At the May meeting of the Wexford Borough District, Councillor Leonard Kelly emphasized the need for closer monitoring during the busy summer months. He requested, “Can we increase patrols to ensure there’s no illegal camping or fires being set in the dunes?” He also expressed worries that a wildfire similar to the one at the Raven in 2018 could happen again.

Councillor Robbie Staples supported this call, while environmental engineer Hugh Maguire explained that Wexford County Council is actively preparing for the expected rise in visitors.

“Our beach wardens will be watching out and are conscious of fires and campers,” Maguire said. “I fully agree regarding the dangers at Curracloe and the Raven. This will definitely be on our agenda as the beach season kicks off.”
