Camping continues to be one of America’s most cherished summer traditions, whether it involves roasting marshmallows, swimming under the sun, or swapping stories around a crackling fire. This June, in celebration of National Camping Month, Diane Eichler, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Kampgrounds of America (KOA), joined a national satellite media tour to discuss the ongoing popularity of camping. She spotlighted memorable campgrounds and experiences across the country that continue to attract outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
Interest in outdoor travel is surging, with camping now a component in 25% of all leisure trips. Compared to 2019, 2024 saw 11 million more households embracing camping. Even more promising, most of these newcomers plan to return in 2025, confirming that camping is evolving from a temporary craze into a lasting travel movement. As travel costs continue to climb, many are choosing camping as an economical alternative. Around 80% of campers report that inflation has influenced their travel choices. Rather than giving up travel entirely, 72% say they now view camping as a cost-effective way to explore, particularly appealing to families trying to stretch their vacation budgets.
Camping in 2024 also reflects a broader desire for wellness and simplicity. More campers are seeking peace of mind and better mental health, with 42% saying they use camping to boost their well-being. This trend has led to increased interest in “wellness by water” options such as lakeside spots, beachside camps, and serene riverside getaways. Additionally, nostalgia plays a key role in shaping new camping habits. Many travelers are rediscovering simple pleasures like tent camping, storytelling, and disconnecting from digital distractions.
KOA’s network of over 500 campgrounds across North America goes far beyond the traditional tent setup. Travelers can choose from full-hookup RV sites, Deluxe Cabins with full amenities, or more unique lodging like Airstreams, glamping tents, and even treehouses. To make the experience enjoyable for all ages, KOA also provides family-friendly features like swimming pools, organized events, KampK9® dog parks, and a variety of kid-focused activities. Whether one seeks adventure, tranquility, or family bonding, KOA continues to make camping accessible, memorable, and tailored to every kind of camper.
