Search crews are still working to locate three missing hikers who disappeared in the water near Rattlesnake Falls in Soda Springs, according to an update from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.
Authorities said six men were hiking in the area when three of them jumped into the water and never resurfaced. One member of the group called 911 shortly before 3 p.m. to report the incident.
The sheriff’s office immediately launched a search effort with support from a California Highway Patrol helicopter, as well as its own dive and search and rescue teams.
Initially, officials believed the incident occurred near Heath Falls, but deputies later confirmed the group had been at Rattlesnake Falls.
On Thursday, a specialized dive team was flown into the area to aid in the search. However, efforts were suspended later that day due to hazardous conditions. Authorities cited poor underwater visibility caused by debris and strong currents, as well as high winds that made helicopter operations unsafe.
Officials emphasized the remote nature of the area, which requires a strenuous three-hour hike to access. The search is expected to resume once conditions improve.
