The Fraser Valley chapter of WildSafeBC has issued a public safety alert following a recent cougar sighting near a well-used hiking trail in Chilliwack, British Columbia.
On Thursday afternoon, WildSafeBC shared a post on social media confirming that the City of Chilliwack requested their assistance in notifying the public. The cougar was reportedly spotted on Little Mountain, in the vicinity of the water tower—a landmark accessible by a stair-filled trail off Yale Road that is frequently used by hikers and runners.
“Keep your backpack on. If you see a cougar, keep your eye on them, and you can throw rocks at them,” WildSafeBC Fraser Valley advised in the post. “Be big and loud….Hey Cougar, Hey Cougar. Keep your pets leashed and small children close to you. Bear spray also is effective with cougars. Please learn how to use it (I can help you with that!).”
Safety Guidelines Issued for Hikers and Outdoor Enthusiasts
WildSafeBC has also provided a set of recommended safety practices for anyone venturing into cougar territory:
- Avoid direct encounters by staying aware of your surroundings.
- Carry bear spray and know how to use it effectively.
- If you see a cougar, stop and stay calm. Do not turn your back or run.
- Maintain eye contact, make yourself look larger, and yell assertively.
- Back away slowly, and if attacked, fight back with full force.
- Stay close to others in your group and use bear spray if needed.
As the summer hiking season continues, officials are urging trail users in the Chilliwack area to take extra precautions, especially in areas known for wildlife activity.
