FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia’s prime fishing season has officially started, and the Gateway to Fishing program is making it easier for people to enjoy the outdoors.
Since March, anglers have been heading to their favorite fishing spots, with the season expected to last until June. The Gateway to Fishing program is helping by offering the necessary resources to make fishing more accessible and enjoyable for families and friends.
“We’re trying to introduce people to fishing,” said Keith Weaver, fisheries biologist for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and one of the program’s coordinators. “It’s been rewarding to see the increased interest in fishing.”
The program hosts on-site events that provide fishing equipment and guidance for those who may be new to the sport. By bringing together families and friends, the program aims to create lasting memories, even if the catch of the day is just an enjoyable day outdoors.
“We want people to know you don’t need expensive gear,” Weaver said. “We enhance the fisheries by stocking additional fish in Piedmont and Adams Parks. It’s about getting away from the stresses of life and having a good time.”
Though the program has plans to expand in the future, it currently focuses on Piedmont Park in downtown Atlanta and Adams Park on the city’s south side. These parks offer prime fishing opportunities within Fulton County. The program provides extra tools and fish to help people have the best experience, but it also encourages participants to make memories with their loved ones while enjoying nature.
Fishing is a year-round activity, but March through June is considered the best time for residents of Fulton County to fish.
“Spring is when anglers experience the most success,” Weaver said. “For folks in the metro-Atlanta area, this is the prime season to fish and enjoy the outdoors.”
