A local campsite in Guernsey has made history by becoming the first business on the island to receive The King’s Award for Enterprise. Camp de Rêves earned recognition in the Sustainable Development category for its commitment to eco-friendly operations.
Camp de Rêves Celebrated for Green Innovation
Camp de Rêves, located in St Pierre du Bois, was selected for its dedication to sustainability. The campsite uses eco-conscious materials and practices to reduce its environmental impact. This award highlights the business’s efforts to balance tourism with responsibility to nature.
The King’s Awards for Enterprise are one of the highest honors for British businesses. They recognize excellence across categories such as innovation, international trade, and sustainable development. Camp de Rêves joins 198 other businesses from across the UK that received awards this year.
A Royal Recognition for Local Efforts
Winning this award allows the campsite to display the official King’s Award flag, marking it as a leader in sustainable tourism. The awards, originally launched in 1966 as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, carry significant prestige and are often referred to as a royal seal of approval.
Danny Barnes, co-owner of the campsite, has been invited to attend a special reception at Windsor Castle. The event, hosted by King Charles III, will celebrate this year’s winners.
Owners Express Pride and Commitment
Jane Barnes, who also co-owns the site, said the team is thrilled by the recognition. “We are so pleased to receive this incredible recognition for all the hard work we’ve put into creating Camp de Rêves,” she said. “This award affirms our dedication to sustainability and the positive impact we strive to have on both our community and the natural world.”
Encouragement for Other Guernsey Businesses
Deputy Steve Falla, Vice-President of the Committee for Economic Development, praised the Barnes family for their achievement. “To be recognised by the King in this way speaks volumes for the quality of what the Barnes family has created in St Peter’s,” he said.
He added that the award is a win not just for the business but also for tourism and for Guernsey as a whole. He hopes more local businesses will be inspired to apply in future years.
The success of Camp de Rêves shows how strong values and a clear vision for sustainability can lead to national recognition. It also sets an example for eco-friendly tourism across the region.
