An unexpected moment during stage three of the Giro d’Italia caught fans by surprise. A mountain goat ran onto the road during a fast descent and almost knocked over rider Dion Smith.
A Close Call in Albania
The incident happened on the final day of the race’s visit to Albania. The stage was from Vlorë to Vlorë. A group of goats was standing on the side of the road as the riders came down a hill at high speed.
One goat suddenly broke away from the herd. It dashed across the road, heading for the rocky cliffs on the other side. Unfortunately, Dion Smith of Intermarché-Wanty was in its path.
The goat almost hit Smith’s bike. For a moment, it looked like the New Zealander would crash. But he managed to keep control and avoid falling.
Smith Shares His Story
After the stage, Smith talked about the close encounter.
“I didn’t have much time to think: I saw it about 10 seconds before it happened. A policeman was trying to hold them back, but one or two goats got through.”
“I had to decide fast: Everyone else went left, and I went right. Luckily, I stayed upright.”
When asked if he made contact with the goat, Smith replied: “I think a little bit. I need to see the replay. It all happened so fast. I was just trying to stay on the bike. It felt very close.”
Animal Concerns Raised Before the Race
Before the race began in Albania, some teams worried about wild animals. During training rides, stray dogs had already caused a few issues.
“I expected dogs, not goats,” Smith said with a laugh. “But there are a lot of goats here.”
Despite the incident, Smith had good things to say about Albania.
“Albania’s been great: It’s beautiful in the south. They’ve done a great job hosting the race. It’s been different – just watch out for the goats!”
The GOAT Joke Takes a Twist
In professional cycling, the word “goat” often refers to the “Greatest of All Time” – a title many fans give to riders like Tadej Pogačar. But this time, a real goat became the star.
As the race goes on, fans will remember this strange but funny moment. And Smith, thankfully, rides on with only a good story to tell.
