Santa Fe National Forest Opens for 2025 Camping Season with Site Closures and Safety Updates

by Alice

The 2025 camping season has officially begun in the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF), inviting families and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the timeless experiences of summer camping. From the aroma of dinner cooking over a fire to late-night marshmallow roasting and the occasional struggle to pitch a tent, these classic camping moments are alive and well across the SFNF’s diverse landscape. The forest offers opportunities for everyone, from first-time campers to seasoned outdoor adventurers, with a wide variety of sites and settings to explore.

Most of the developed campgrounds across the SFNF opened to the public on Friday, May 9. However, several sites remain closed due to ongoing construction and public access improvement projects that are scheduled to continue through the summer season. In the Pecos/Las Vegas district, closures include the Holy Ghost Group Site, Jack’s Creek Group Site, Cowles Pond Fishing Site, and Field Tract Campground. Campers should also note that no water services will be provided at any district campgrounds in this area.

In the Coyote/Española region, the Headquarters Well—used as a day-use trailhead rather than a campground—is closed, and a camping closure is in effect until December 31, 2025. Meanwhile, in the Jemez/Cuba area, several sites are affected by pavement preservation efforts. The Jemez Falls Campground is currently closed but is expected to reopen by July 30, 2025. Redondo and Vista Linda Campgrounds remain open for now, although Vista Linda may close later this summer depending on construction progress.

The SFNF is also modernizing its fee system, shifting to a cashless payment model to make transactions more efficient for campers. Visitors are encouraged to download the recreation.gov app prior to arrival, create an account, and log in. At participating campgrounds, they can scan a QR code at the site kiosk to use the Scan & Pay system. This feature allows for offline payment, which is processed once users return to an area with service. Campgrounds offering this feature include popular spots such as Dark Canyon, Vista Linda, East Fork, Redondo, La Cueva, La Junta, Las Casitas, Spanish Queen, Jemez Falls Trailhead, Clear Creek Picnic Area, and the San Gregorio Trailhead.

As safety remains a top priority, the Forest Service continues to implement policies to ensure a safe and accessible experience for all visitors. The SFNF is currently under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions due to high fire danger. These restrictions are in place to protect public health and safety and to safeguard the forest’s natural resources and infrastructure. Campers are advised to review the full fire restriction order available on the SFNF website before heading out.

For more detailed information on campground openings, closures, available amenities, and ongoing updates, visitors can refer to the official Santa Fe National Forest website or follow its updates on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
