Dozens of new camping pitches have been approved for a site in Leicestershire to meet rising demand for outdoor leisure. The expansion will take place near Stoney Cove and is intended to enhance an already “established” tourism business in the region.
Matthew Rowe, the owner of Fortway Farm Leisure and Fishery in Stoney Stanton, secured approval for 50 dedicated gravel camping pitches—doubling the number of pitches previously available at the site. According to Mr. Rowe, this move will help grow the area’s established camping and caravan operations, located just a two-minute drive from Stoney Cove.
The approved plans, submitted to Blaby District Council (BDC), also include a new internal road and the construction of a children’s play area. Additional elements of the development feature a dedicated off-season storage space for caravans and retrospective approval for existing on-site facilities, including toilets, showers, and washing areas housed in a current building.
In his planning application, Mr. Rowe stated that Fortway Farm is already used for a variety of leisure and tourism activities such as fishing, camping, and caravanning. He emphasized that the new 50 gravel pitches would help address increasing demand while ensuring they remain dedicated camping spots.
The new play area will feature a bike track and play equipment, and a nature reserve area is also planned to support local wildlife. The site will maintain its current staffing levels, which include two full-time and one part-time employee. Meanwhile, car parking capacity will expand from 25 to 50 spaces.
Blaby District Council approved the project with 17 conditions. Among them is a requirement that usage is capped at 50 camping pitches. Furthermore, all caravan and motorhome pitches must be used solely for holiday purposes and cannot serve as anyone’s main or permanent residence.
