Bristol Unveils £15 Million Cycling Hub Plans for Lawrence Weston

by Alice

A new £15 million regional cycling hub is set to transform Henacre Open Space in Lawrence Weston, as Bristol City Council formally submits its planning application for the project. Newly released images showcase the proposed Bristol Regional Cycling Hub, which would become the city’s premier facility for both competitive and recreational cycling.

The new centre is planned for a former landfill site and is designed to serve a wide range of cyclists, from beginners to professionals. It will feature a 1km competition-grade track, a 250m traffic-free training area for learners of all ages, a car park, a main building, and new links to nearby cycling routes, making the site an integrated part of the city’s cycling infrastructure.

According to the council, the hub will replace the Bristol Family Cycling Centre currently located at the Old Whitchurch Athletics Track, which has been in operation since 2010. Funding for the new facility will come from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, a government initiative managed by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), after a previous application to the Levelling Up fund was turned down.

Planning documents indicate that the project has been designed in collaboration with British Cycling to meet competition standards, allowing it to host local races and regional championships. The inclusion of a dedicated learning space for children and adults reflects a dual commitment to sport and community education, providing a safe environment for developing cycling skills.

If the plans receive approval, construction of the Bristol Regional Cycling Hub is expected to proceed with an opening targeted for 2027, marking a significant milestone in the city’s long-term investment in sustainable transport and active lifestyles.
