To create a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment during Owen Sound’s popular fall fishing derbies, the City is launching a new Fish Derby Camping (FDC) permit program for 2025. This new initiative aims to regulate camping activities along the public harbourfront during the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular and The Sound Charity Shootout, while addressing long-standing issues such as unregulated camping, garbage buildup, and public safety concerns.
Starting in 2025, a new by-law requires that individuals camping with RVs or trailers along the east and west harbourfront must purchase and visibly display a valid FDC permit. The permitted Derby Camping period begins at noon on Wednesday, August 20, and ends at noon on Monday, September 1. Camping is restricted to specific locations detailed in the City’s official Derby Camping map. Tents are not permitted, and each vehicle occupying a designated space must have an FDC pass clearly displayed.
Permits go on sale June 17, 2025, and can be obtained either through the City’s website or in person at City Hall. Because space is limited, permits will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers must provide a valid registration number for either the Salmon Spectacular Derby or The Sound Charity Shootout to qualify for a permit.
In addition to the main harbourfront camping areas, a limited number of Derby Camping spaces will be available at the Westside Boat Launch and Georgian Shores Marina.
The introduction of the Fish Derby Camping Program is part of Owen Sound’s broader effort to ensure responsible use of public spaces while continuing to support cherished local traditions.
