The City of Savanna has garnered national attention by earning the title of “Best Small Town for Adventure” for three consecutive years, from 2021 through 2023, in USA Today’s national contest. This consistent recognition has placed the northwestern Illinois town firmly on the map as a leading destination for travelers seeking a blend of outdoor activities and small-town appeal.
In addition to its triumph in the adventure category, Savanna also received a nomination for “Best Midwestern Small Town,” securing an impressive sixth-place ranking. These accolades highlight the unique qualities that make Savanna a standout location along the Mississippi River. Brienna Junk, marketing director for Explore Savanna, emphasized that the area is a hidden gem characterized by its natural beauty, rich history, and a welcoming community spirit that includes a charming historic downtown.
Savanna has established itself as one of the top outdoor adventure spots in Northwest Illinois. A key attraction in the region is the Mississippi Palisades State Park, renowned for its hiking trails, dramatic rock formations, scenic overlooks, and opportunities for rock climbing. The park offers a picturesque setting that appeals to both avid adventurers and casual nature lovers.
Beyond the state park, Savanna is a hub for outdoor recreation including biking, boating, and motorcycle tourism. These activities draw visitors looking for immersive experiences in the great outdoors, making the town a vibrant destination throughout the year.
The town also hosts several events that celebrate its community spirit and artistic flair. On June 22, “Makers on the Mississippi” will bring artists to the riverfront to paint murals, while children enjoy chalk art activities in Marquette Park alongside various vendors. The Savanna Farmers Market takes place every other Sunday at the Polar Express Pavilion, with dates and updates available on social media.
Community celebrations continue with Savanna’s 4th of July Bash, scheduled for July 5, featuring a parade, festivities at the high school, and a fireworks display. Later in the summer, “Summerween” will take place on July 19 in the high school parking lot, offering a Halloween-themed fundraiser with kids’ games, bounce houses, vendors, and more. These events further illustrate the town’s commitment to creating memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike.
