In a vibrant public display of unity, fitness, and peace, Srinagar today witnessed the successful hosting of the “Cyclothon – Pedal for Peace,” drawing over 1,000 participants from various age groups and communities. The event served as a symbolic ride for harmony and youth empowerment in Jammu and Kashmir.
Flagged off by Satish Sharma, Minister for FCS&CA, IT, Youth Services and Sports, the cyclothon began from the verdant Police Golf Course and concluded at the Astro Turf Ground TRC. Enthusiastic cheers and a festive atmosphere marked the entire event, which was organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council as part of a broader government initiative to foster communal harmony and promote fitness culture in the region.
In his address, Minister Sharma emphasized the event’s deeper purpose: “This cyclothon is more than just a sporting event. It is a symbolic journey towards a peaceful and united Jammu and Kashmir. It reflects the resilience and potential of our youth. Through events like this, we aim to channel their energy into constructive, nation-building activities.” He reiterated the government’s commitment to engaging youth positively and fostering a spirit of progress.
The Minister further revealed that the inspiration for organizing the cyclothon came from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, President of the JK Sports Council, who is himself an advocate for sports and fitness. Sharma also announced that similar community-based, youth-driven events will now be conducted weekly across various parts of the Union Territory to ensure continuous public engagement.
The event saw the participation of numerous dignitaries including Legislators Farooq Shah, Dr. Shafi, Tanveer Sadiq, Ehsan Pardesi, and Mushtaq Guru. Other key attendees included Commissioner Secretary of Youth Services and Sports Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary of J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul, and RTO Kashmir Qazi Irfan. Senior officials from the Sports Council, Traffic Police, Health Services, and local administration also lent their support.
Participants ranged from young school and college students to amateur cyclists, sports clubs, and professional athletes, all united by a common goal—pedaling for a brighter, peaceful future. The cycling route wound through the picturesque lanes of Srinagar and was supported by volunteers and staff who ensured safety, hydration, and encouragement throughout the ride.
At the closing ceremony, the Minister distributed free bicycles to the eldest and youngest participants, a gesture that highlighted the inclusive spirit of the event. Significantly, the Cyclothon – Pedal for Peace marked the beginning of a comprehensive events calendar planned by the J&K Sports Council, including marathons, yoga camps, sports tournaments, awareness campaigns, and fitness workshops. These upcoming initiatives aim to build community cohesion, promote health awareness, and strengthen the social fabric of the region.
