Heavy rains are raising safety concerns for outdoor enthusiasts in Tyler, as officials urge hikers to take precautions when visiting local trails.
Continuous downpours have increased the risk of trail hazards, prompting warnings from park managers and tree care professionals. Bill Porter, Sales Consultant at Lester Tree Services, explained how the excessive moisture impacts tree stability.
“One of the most detrimental things to our trees is when we get a large amount of saturation in a short time,” Porter said.
He noted that over-saturated ground weakens root systems, making trees more prone to losing limbs. In fact, falling branches can happen even without wind.
“You really don’t need wind. If a tree is compromised, it can just reach a point where a branch falls for no reason,” he added.
For those planning to head out after the rain eases, Porter offers simple advice: be alert.
“If you don’t have to be on the trails in bad weather, don’t be on them. And if you are, just make sure you look ahead and watch the canopy where you’re walking,” he advised.
Jose Parga, Parks Manager for the City of Tyler, emphasized that although the current rainfall aligns with past years, trail safety remains a priority—especially with more storms expected.
“Our crews will go out and inspect these areas. Of course, this is once the storm passes—we’ll inspect and assess these areas and get them cleaned up,” Parga said.
Until that happens, he urges the public to stay vigilant and avoid flooded areas when possible.
“Right now, we’re very saturated. There are roads that are flooded. The trails are most likely flooded. If you’ve got a trail that’s on an elevated section and the runoff goes down away from it, you know, use your best judgment,” Porter concluded.
Both officials and tree experts remind residents that staying informed and using common sense are the best ways to stay safe outdoors during severe weather.
