Matildas Announce Argentina Squad Without Sam Kerr

by Alice

The Matildas will face Argentina in two international friendlies without several key players, including captain Sam Kerr, as the team prepares for the Asian Cup.

Australia’s star striker Sam Kerr remains absent from the national squad. She has not yet recovered enough to return to competition after tearing her ACL in January 2024. Despite starting light training with Chelsea late in the season, Kerr is not ready for selection. She was present during April’s friendlies against South Korea in a supporting role but did not play.

Kerr’s injury has now kept her off the field for 16 months. Her ongoing recovery raises concerns about whether she will return before the 2025 Asian Cup in Australia. The Matildas have only one more international window before the tournament begins in March next year.

The team is also missing Mary Fowler, who is out with an ACL injury. Ellie Carpenter and Katrina Gorry are both on personal leave and won’t join the squad. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold is sidelined with a leg injury, and Tameka Yallop is out with a hamstring issue.

These absences have opened doors for new and returning players to gain valuable international experience.

New Faces and Fresh Opportunities

Uncapped goalkeeper Morgan Aquino returns after strong performances in the USL Super League. Isabel Gomez earns her spot following standout games in the A-League Women for Central Coast Mariners. Kahli Johnson, a 21-year-old forward from Calgary Fire, has been called up for the first time.

Amy Sayer rejoins the squad after her recovery from an ACL injury. Goalkeeper Jada Whyman is also back following a long injury break.

Coach Sermanni Praises Progress

Interim coach Tom Sermanni expressed satisfaction with the team’s recent progress. Australia secured two wins over South Korea, showing signs of recovery after a poor She Believes Cup campaign.

“We were pleased with how the group responded during the Korea series,” Sermanni said. “It showed our foundations are strong. This squad rewards players who have performed well locally and overseas.”

He added that each match is vital preparation for the Asian Cup. “Every window brings us closer. It’s a chance to build our identity, refine our style, and strengthen our team unity.”

Upcoming Matches Against Argentina

The Matildas will play Argentina on 30 May in Melbourne and 2 June in Canberra. Argentina is ranked 33rd in the world. The matches will help the team prepare for next year’s tournament.
