The NRL has revealed the four teams heading to Las Vegas for the 2026 season opener, with the Bulldogs’ rising popularity playing a key role in the selection.
NRL names four clubs for 2026 Vegas opener
The NRL has confirmed that Canterbury Bulldogs, St George Illawarra Dragons, North Queensland Cowboys, and Newcastle Knights will all travel to Las Vegas for the 2026 season opener. The matches are scheduled for 1 March (AEDT), and all four teams will be making their debut in the Las Vegas fixture.
Double-header planned with added Super League clash
Newcastle will take on North Queensland in one match, followed by a clash between the Bulldogs and Dragons. In addition, Hull KR will play Leeds in a Super League fixture. However, no women’s match has been scheduled for the event, unlike previous years.
Bulldogs’ booming fanbase drives selection
Canterbury’s growing popularity played a key role in their selection. Earlier this year, they drew a record 65,603 fans for a Good Friday clash against South Sydney. They also managed a strong 24,000 turnout on a Sunday night against Newcastle and capped last season with three straight crowds of over 30,000.
Early announcement aims to boost attendance
NRL officials are aiming to surpass the 45,209 attendance figure from this year’s Las Vegas event. Unlike in previous years, where announcements came in July or August, the early release of fixtures is expected to help promote the event more effectively.
World Club Challenge still uncertain
The future of the World Club Challenge remains unclear. The match was not held this year as Penrith and Wigan were in Las Vegas. With the Bulldogs currently leading the NRL ladder, their participation in a 2026 World Club Challenge could be in doubt if they win the 2025 premiership.
Form and hopes heading into 2026
The Bulldogs and Cowboys are considered strong contenders for the finals in September, while the Dragons and Knights may need to improve significantly. The Cowboys’ attacking power makes them a threat, but consistency will be key.
No women’s match in 2026 lineup
The NRL chose not to include a women’s match in the 2026 event. This comes after Australia’s dominant 90-4 win over England in this year’s fixture. League officials said the event may have been too long, suggesting a shorter format next year.
