MECC Cracks Down on Environmental Violations in Northern Camps and Territorial Waters

by Alice

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), through its Department of Wildlife Protection, has recorded six violations during aerial inspections conducted with Autogyro aircraft over designated northern camping zones, including Al-Ghashamiya. These inspections are part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to monitor adherence to winter camping regulations.

The inspections led to the discovery of six camps that were found to be in breach of the approved environmental guidelines. In response, specialized teams have begun legal procedures to remove these violations, aiming to protect the natural environment and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors to these recreational areas.

In a separate operation, MECC’s marine protection teams uncovered illegal fishing gear hidden inside the fuel tank of a dhow operating within Qatar’s territorial waters. Legal actions have been taken against the violators.

Additionally, the Marine Protection Department removed several abandoned fish traps—known locally as Gargoor—from the Fasht Al-Nof area in the northern region. This action is part of the Ministry’s broader initiative to protect marine biodiversity and maintain ecological balance.

The Ministry clarified that the abandonment of fishing equipment at sea is a direct violation of current environmental laws. It warned that such practices not only disrupt environmental harmony but also pose a serious threat to marine life.

The Marine Protection Department reiterated its ongoing commitment to conducting inspection campaigns and field surveillance. It urged all fishermen to adhere strictly to environmental laws to help preserve marine ecosystems and ensure the sustainability of marine resources in Qatar’s waters.
