Boulder Junction is rapidly transforming into a popular hub for outdoor activities thanks to upgrades led by the Boulder Junction Community Park’s group. Recent improvements include new playgrounds, basketball courts, and a disc golf course, drawing more visitors to the area.
In 2021, the Boulder Junction Parks and Recreation Board decided it was time to replace outdated playground equipment. Board member Dennis Duke strongly supported the initiative.
“There was a bold goal to raise $300,000 for a new playground,” Duke said. “Many doubted we could achieve it, but over two years, we raised the full amount and installed the new playground.”
The playground quickly became a favorite spot, attracting visitors from across the Northwoods and even the Upper Peninsula.
“That success gave us the confidence to pursue other projects,” Duke added.
Since then, Boulder Junction parks have undergone several upgrades to complement the new playground. These include a unique ice-skating ribbon and the purchase of 10 acres dedicated to a disc golf course.
“We’re focused on activities that many people can enjoy,” Duke said. “Outdoor recreation is our priority.”
One of the latest efforts has been upgrading the basketball court. Thanks to donors and volunteers, the court was resurfaced and fitted with new hoops, with more improvements planned.
“This summer, we’re installing a fence and benches,” Duke shared. “Other than that, the basketball court will be ready for use.”
Volunteers are also finishing construction on the park’s new disc golf course, Tall Pines. Duke hopes to have it completed by midsummer but emphasized the need for community help.
“We always need volunteers,” he said. “Whether you can spare an hour or several, just get in touch with us. There are plenty of ways to contribute, and we rely on volunteers to bring these projects to life.”
