Layar Cycling Carnival 2025 Returns with Most Challenging Route and RM51,260 Prize Pool

by Alice

The Layar Cycling Carnival is set to make its return from August 29 to 31, 2025, featuring what is anticipated to be its most challenging route to date. Cyclists from West Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei will compete for a total prize pool of RM51,260 in this high-stakes event.

This year’s edition is organized by the Public Works Department (JKR) Betong in collaboration with SABERKAS Layar, and will center around a 102-kilometre road race known among participants as the ‘Dragon’s Back.’ The nickname reflects the course’s reputation for its steep climbs and sharp descents, making it a true test of endurance and skill.

The event aims to identify new cycling talents, boost Layar’s profile as a destination for sports tourism, and promote a healthier lifestyle through cycling. Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, Deputy Minister of Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, highlighted during a press conference that the carnival will also feature criterium races, which are expected to draw both elite national teams and enthusiastic amateurs from across the region.

Organizers anticipate a turnout that will meet or exceed last year’s 337 participants, noting that several international teams have already shown interest. According to Rentap, this event is more than just a competitive race; it plays a significant role in Sarawak’s growing sports tourism sector.

Among the top competitors expected this year are Malaysia’s TSG Cycling Academy, strong contingents from Brunei and Indonesia, and prominent local teams such as Sonamu, Pro Apparel, and SSC Development Team. Beyond the competitive elements, the carnival will offer a wide range of attractions including food fairs, cultural performances, community sports, and traditional longhouse homestays for visiting guests.

Rentap also expressed hope that ongoing road improvements in the region will allow for even more demanding race routes in the coming years. He indicated that there are plans to expand the race distance beyond 100 kilometres over the next three editions of the carnival.

The event is set to coincide with the Merdeka weekend, and organizers are optimistic that it will draw not only competitors but also families and cycling fans. Rentap noted how the event’s family-friendly nature sometimes inspires younger generations to take up the sport, strengthening community bonds through shared participation in cycling.

Registration for the event will open on June 1. Fees are set at RM110 for standard entry, RM90 for early bird registration available until July 5, and RM30 for youth participants. Registration will close on August 9.

Also attending the press conference were Jason Ng, Divisional Engineer of JKR Betong; James Agat, event chairman from SABERKAS Layar; and representatives from ZASS Events, Zamri Dollah and Seiji Borhan.
