Farm-based camping holidays in North Yorkshire are seeing a significant rise in popularity, with new data from booking platform Pitchup revealing a 40% increase in reservations compared to the same period last year.
So far in 2025, 8,800 bookings have been made for farm-based campsites across the county, up from 6,300 at this point in 2024. With the summer season just beginning, experts anticipate this number will continue to climb, potentially leading to a record-breaking year for rural tourism in the region.
Dan Yates, founder of Pitchup, noted the growing appeal of North Yorkshire as a travel destination. “The fact that the number of people visiting North Yorkshire is growing at such a rate suggests the county is now firmly on the tourism map,” he said. “But that’s no great surprise as whatever type of holiday you want, you can find it there.”
Mr. Yates highlighted the increasing demand for farm-based holidays, which offer visitors a back-to-basics, affordable alternative to more traditional vacations. He explained, “Each year, hundreds of thousands of people want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and from phones, tablets, and laptops, and relax in an authentic, rural setting. You can’t beat farms for this.”
The trend toward farm camping has gained momentum since the COVID-19 pandemic, with travelers seeking out quiet, natural spaces away from crowded urban areas. Mr. Yates believes this shift could elevate North Yorkshire to the status of other renowned rural destinations. “North Yorkshire could, in time, develop into a tourism hotspot to rival the Peak District and the Lake District,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming the county’s wide-ranging appeal: “Whatever you want, whatever experience you are after, you’ll be able to find it in North Yorkshire.”
