Wagga Wagga is set to reaffirm its growing reputation as a premier cycling destination as it prepares to host New South Wales’ most prestigious road cycling event in just over two months.
The 2025 AusCycling Road State Championships for NSW, featuring both junior and masters competitions, will take place from 15 to 17 August. The three-day championship will serve as a major milestone on the cycling calendar and a key lead-up to the 2025 AusCycling Junior and Masters Road National Championship, also scheduled to be held in Wagga Wagga in September.
For the first time in the event’s history, the NSW championships will be conducted on the same closed-road courses that will be used for the national titles a month later. This unique format provides a rare opportunity for riders to experience a “curtain-raiser” race on identical terrain.
“Hosting the NSW state championships on the same courses as the national championships provides an opportunity for our athletes to familiarise themselves with the conditions, terrain and tactical demands they will face at the national level,” said Nick Hannan of AusCycling.
“It also provides the local community and cycling fans a chance to witness the next generation of NSW talent and seasoned masters riders compete at the highest level,” he added.
AusCycling has collaborated closely with the Wagga Wagga City Council and Wagga Wagga Cycling Club to ensure both the state and national events highlight the region’s outstanding cycling infrastructure and warm hospitality.
In addition to the road courses, the competition will also utilise Wagga Wagga’s acclaimed Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Reserve, a facility that continues to attract elite-level cycling events.
Wagga Wagga Mayor Dallas Tout expressed enthusiasm about hosting the championships, noting the city’s growing reputation for sporting excellence.
“It is yet another feather in Wagga Wagga’s cap when it comes to its reputation as being the City of Good Sports,” Cr Tout stated.
“Our state-of-the-art Multisport Cycling Complex at Pomingalarna Reserve is proving to be a great drawcard for this elite level of competition.”
The timing of the event is especially significant for many riders who will use the state championships as critical preparation for the upcoming national races in September.
“A lot of these riders will be using this event as a lead-up to the national championships, to be held in Wagga Wagga later in September, and we’re looking forward to seeing the riders put their skills to the test on the criterium track,” Cr Tout added.
With up to 350 participants and event officials, along with their families and supporters expected to visit for the three days of competition, the event promises substantial benefits for local tourism and hospitality in Wagga Wagga and surrounding areas.
This championship not only reinforces Wagga Wagga’s strong ties to competitive cycling but also highlights its capacity to host major sporting events that engage the community and boost the regional economy.
