Battling the Elements: A Rain-Soaked Camping Experience at Willow Bay

by Alice

A memorable camping trip at Willow Bay during a particularly wet Memorial Day weekend served as a vivid reminder of the importance of preparation when facing unpredictable weather. The trip, which took place during a spring that mirrored the current season’s chill and dampness, demonstrated how proper planning can turn an otherwise miserable outing into an enjoyable adventure.

Faced with forecasts of unseasonably cold, windy, and rainy conditions, campers Jane and her companion arrived well-equipped. Understanding the climate of the region, they came prepared with thermal undergarments, winter coats, rain gear, stocking caps for sleeping, rubber boots, warm gloves, and a quart of kerosene to help ignite damp firewood. Treating the trip as a winter expedition proved wise, as their gear allowed them to remain warm and dry throughout the weekend.

Upon arrival, the couple selected a raised camping spot and dug a shallow trench around their tent to divert any rainwater. In contrast, some friends who arrived later chose a seemingly flat site, unknowingly placing their tent in a shallow depression. When warned of the potential flooding hazard, they opted not to relocate, hoping the rain would hold off.

As camp was set up, the chill quickly took its toll on the less-prepared campers. Despite early amusement at Jane and her companion’s bundled appearance — one friend joking, “You guys look like you’re going deer hunting!” — it soon became apparent that layers and warm clothing were essential. The temperature hovered around 50 degrees, and as the wind picked up and sneakers grew damp, discomfort set in.

The evening fire brought temporary warmth and a sense of camaraderie as hotdogs and s’mores were roasted. Later that night, the well-prepared couple retreated to their tent, outfitted with fleece layers, thick socks, and stocking caps. Their high-quality air mattress provided added comfort, and their sleeping bags, zipped together, ensured a warm and restful night.

The next morning, while others emerged visibly chilled, Jane and her companion remained warm. Sharing their extra fleece vests, jackets, and sweatshirts with the group helped boost morale as temperatures continued to drop.

Despite the dreary skies and a reservoir swollen three feet above its normal waterline, the couple launched their canoe and began fishing. Dressed warmly and braving foot-high waves and misty air, they paddled along the shoreline, casting their favorite black and silver Rapala lures with wire leaders. Though such leaders had become increasingly difficult to find, they proved effective against the area’s pike and muskellunge population.

Fishing was rewarding. The shoreline teemed with smallmouth bass, and nearly every accurate cast drew a strike. Within an hour, they had landed roughly 20 bass. A particularly successful moment came when Jane landed a surprise 20-inch walleye near a submerged log. They continued fishing in the creek mouth, landing five more walleyes, each over 16 inches. A standout moment followed when Jane’s well-placed cast between two rocks lured an 18-inch largemouth bass — an uncommon catch in the Allegheny Reservoir.

That evening, fresh walleye made for a satisfying dinner. However, as rain set in overnight, it became clear that the earlier warning about the shallow campsite had gone unheeded. Around 2 a.m., a car engine roared to life — a sign that the sunken tent had likely flooded, and its occupants were retreating from the waterlogged site.

The experience highlighted not only the joys of camping and fishing in less-than-ideal weather, but also the critical importance of preparation, foresight, and adaptability in the great outdoors.
