The Adaptive Surf Project is enhancing accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges by expanding its beach mat installations across the Grand Strand this summer. The latest development includes the installation of Mobi Mats at Lakewood Camping Resort in Myrtle Beach.
These Mobi Mats offer a firm and stable pathway across the sand, making it easier for individuals using wheelchairs and other mobility aids to access the shoreline. The initiative aims to break down physical barriers and ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the beach.
Lakewood Camping Resort has joined forces with Adaptive Surf to promote inclusivity on the beaches. In addition to the new Mobi Mats, the resort has added five beach wheelchairs, which are available to guests free of charge. These can be checked out through the resort’s Information Center.
Adaptive Surf Project continues to lead the way in creating beach environments where individuals with disabilities can enjoy outdoor recreation without limitations. The organization not only advocates for greater accessibility but also promotes the sport of surfing for those with physical challenges.
Kevin Strickland, General Manager of Lakewood Camping Resort, emphasized the resort’s commitment to inclusivity.
“We believe every guest should have the chance to experience the joy of the ocean, regardless of physical ability,” said Strickland.
Luke Sharp, Director of the Adaptive Surf Project, praised the collaboration with Lakewood.
“We are excited to help Lakewood take this next step in accessibility,” Sharp stated. “The addition of the Mobi Mat and beach wheelchairs is about more than access. It’s about dignity, freedom, and making sure everyone can experience the beauty of the ocean.”
With each new installation and partnership, the Adaptive Surf Project continues its mission to make the Grand Strand’s beaches more welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
