Grampians National Park Reopens 18 Rock Climbing Areas After Collaborative Review

by Alice

Rock climbing has resumed at 18 sites in Grampians National Park following a major review and collaborative decision-making process involving Parks Victoria, Traditional Owner groups, and Climbing Victoria. The reopened areas became accessible to the public in May after Parks Victoria conducted assessments on 27 climbing locations throughout the park.

The reopened climbing sites include Cave Cliff, The Sun Gate, Watchmen, Centurion Walls, New Era Wall, Labour Ward, Superbia, Gallery Creek, Pastoral Buttress, Rural Rocks, and The Garrets. Additionally, several other climbing locations—Dreamtime Wall, Barbican Rocks, Barbican Wall, Blind Man’s Bluff, HB Wall, Dead Explorers Slab, and Back of Beyond—are expected to reopen but remain temporarily closed due to fire-related impacts.

Parks Victoria acknowledged the collaborative spirit behind the reopening, saying, “We are grateful for their leadership and support in achieving this positive and balanced outcome for both cultural values and the climbing community.”

Climbing Victoria welcomed the decision, calling it a significant step forward after years of ongoing advocacy. A spokesperson stated, “It’s a shift toward better engagement and access for climbers while respecting cultural values. We’re moving toward a better model of engagement, one that respects cultural values and enables more climbing areas to remain open and accessible into the future.”

They also thanked the traditional owner organisations of Gariwerd for their leadership and partnership. “This outcome would not have been possible without their support,” they emphasized.

Assessments continue for other climbing sites, especially those in the southern parts of the Grampians. Climbing Victoria remains hopeful about future reopenings and is committed to ensuring that decision-making processes remain fair, transparent, and focused on protecting cultural heritage while maintaining access for the climbing community.
