After more than a decade of sharing breathtaking wilderness adventures and family-friendly content, Luke Nichols, the creator behind the massively popular YouTube channel “Outdoor Boys,” has announced that he is stepping away from the platform—at least for now.
In an emotional farewell video posted this past weekend, Nichols told his 15.3 million subscribers, “This is going to be my last video for a while. It’s been a wild ride.” Speaking beside a snowy stream in Alaska, he reflected on the demanding journey that brought him and his family into the spotlight.
Nichols began his YouTube journey 11 years ago, first with the “Catfish and Carp” channel before launching “Outdoor Boys.” Since then, he has produced over 1,110 videos, showcasing extreme camping, fishing, and hunting across the Alaskan wilderness. His content often featured his wife Rebecca and their three sons — Tom, Nathan, and Jacob — who quickly became beloved by viewers around the globe.
The rise of “Outdoor Boys” was meteoric. In just the last 18 months, the channel gained 12 million subscribers. However, the channel’s growing success came with unintended consequences.
Nichols admitted that the demands of content creation — from long editing nights to physically taxing trips — were significant. But more than the workload, it was the unrelenting public attention that spurred his decision to step back.
“The sheer volume of fans trying to contact me, trying to take pictures with me, or just trying to come up and talk to me in public can be a bit overwhelming at times,” Nichols said.
He expressed deep concerns about the impact of fame on his family’s privacy and well-being. With over 2.5 billion views on YouTube and an additional 4 billion views from reposted content on other platforms, Nichols felt that the visibility had become unmanageable.
“My wife and I, we both have real concerns about what this will do to our family if I keep growing my YouTube channel at this pace,” he explained. “And the time to stop is before this problem gets so out of hand that my family and I can’t live normal lives.”
Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Nichols developed a passion for the outdoors from a young age. He is a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served as a missionary in Japan, and holds a political science degree from Brigham Young University. He later earned a law degree from George Mason University, practicing criminal defense law in Virginia for a decade before turning his focus full-time to YouTube and moving his family back to Alaska.
Despite the channel’s popularity, Nichols never lost sight of his core values. In a previous video that garnered over 1.4 million views, he and Rebecca spoke openly about their faith and family life.
“Fishing’s not the most important thing in my life by a long shot,” Nichols said. “I enjoy fishing and it’s a hobby, but my faith and my family are much more important to me. It’s what brings me happiness.”
Nichols emphasized that his relationship with God and commitment to living a righteous life are what truly fulfill him.
“What gives me satisfaction and joy in my life is waking up in the morning and knowing that I’m serving the Lord, doing His will, and that I’m right with God.”
Looking ahead, Nichols said he wants to devote more time to mentoring his children — particularly his eldest son, Tom, who has already followed in his father’s footsteps with his own YouTube channel, “Outdoor Tom.” The channel currently boasts over 832,000 subscribers.
“I’ve spent so much time focusing on me and my family and growing my business,” Nichols said. “It’s time to step back and start focusing on other people for a change. I’m excited to see where that takes me.”
Helping his son navigate both adulthood and a burgeoning online presence is a priority for Nichols, especially with Tom turning 18 in less than six years.
Although Nichols is stepping away from the platform, he hasn’t entirely closed the door on returning. He mentioned that he has several unfinished videos—including homesteading updates, travel vlogs, and camping expeditions—that he might release as a single collection later in the year.
“If I decide to finish them, I would post them in one big dump at the end of the year,” he said. “But no matter what, this is going to be my last video for a while.”
Nichols’ heartfelt departure marks the end of an era for fans who have followed the Nichols family through the wilds of Alaska and into their home. His decision to step away underscores the challenges of internet fame, especially when it involves young children and family life.
With a legacy built on authenticity, family values, and respect for the natural world, Luke Nichols leaves behind more than just videos. He leaves a message of balance, purpose, and prioritizing what truly matters.
As he signs off, fans are left not only with countless hours of inspirational content, but with a reminder to live with intention, put family first, and stay grounded — even when success comes calling.
