Peak camping season is here in Nebraska. With smart planning and safety in mind, your next outdoor trip can be fun, easy, and frustration-free.
Get Your Park Entry Permit Early
All vehicles entering Nebraska’s state parks need a park entry permit. This permit gives unlimited access for the calendar year. You can buy one in advance online, at park entrances, Game and Parks offices, or licensed vendors.
Reserve or Claim Your Camping Spot
Nebraska offers both reservation-based and first-come, first-served campsites. Use the “Find a Park” tool online to explore parks that fit your interests and needs.
Reservations can be made up to three days before arrival at most parks. However, five locations — Fremont Lakes, Lake McConaughy, Lake Ogallala, Red Willow Reservoir, and Swanson Reservoir — allow reservations until 2 p.m. the day before, as part of a 2025 test program.
If you’re going during a holiday weekend, especially without a reservation, consider arriving early in the week to get a good spot.
Stay Calm During Busy Weekends
State parks are busier than ever. Memorial Day and other holidays can bring big crowds. Be patient and respectful to staff and other campers.
Follow Campfire Safety Rules
Due to ongoing drought, always check ahead to see if burn bans are in place. If fires are allowed, only use designated fire rings, keep water close, never leave a fire alone, and put it out fully before leaving.
Better yet, use camp stoves with liquid or gas fuel. They are safer and reduce wildfire risk because they don’t create blowing embers.
Don’t Bring Firewood from Home
Bringing firewood can spread pests like the emerald ash borer. Buy firewood locally and leave any unused wood at the campsite for others to use.
Know What the Park Offers
From archery to museums, each state park has unique attractions. Visit the park’s page online to check hours, activities, and fees before your trip.
Bring a Fishing Pole
Fishing is a great activity for all ages. Kids under 16 don’t need a permit. Adults can get a one-day or annual fishing permit online and enjoy the many lakes and rivers Nebraska offers.
Always Wear a Life Jacket
If you’re boating, swimming, paddleboarding, or kayaking, wear a life jacket. Only swim in approved beach areas. Check for swim locations online.
Stay Weather Smart
Watch the forecast and be ready for changes. Many parks have shelters. Don’t hesitate to leave early if severe weather approaches.
Plan Ahead and Enjoy the Season
With the right preparation, your camping trip can be stress-free and full of fun. Whether it’s your first visit or a yearly tradition, Nebraska’s parks offer great outdoor memories. Enjoy the natural beauty while staying safe and prepared.
