Around 1,000 people have helped raise approximately £8,000 by participating in a low-tide walking challenge around the iconic Beachy Head Lighthouse in East Sussex.
The event, known as the annual Beachy Head Lighthouse Challenge, took place on Sunday and involved participants setting off and returning to Holywell on the Eastbourne seafront. Due to tidal patterns, the two-hour round-trip walk is only possible on select days each year.
Organised by the Eastbourne AM Rotary Club, the event draws walkers from across the UK and beyond. This year, one dedicated couple even flew in from the United States to take part.
Event organiser Martin Wellings commented, “It was another amazing day. The weather was perfect and we were delighted at the high turnout once again. It really is a unique event which appeals to so many, both local and much further away.”
All profits from the challenge are donated to local charities. Additionally, part of the funds raised are earmarked for the future repainting of the Beachy Head Lighthouse, known for its iconic red and white stripes.
The lighthouse was last repainted in 2013 following a £27,000 fundraising effort. That campaign was sparked after Trinity House, the lighthouse’s owner, announced in 2011 that it could no longer fund the maintenance. The public response led to the creation of the Beachy Head Lighthouse Challenge that same year, which has continued annually to support the upkeep of the landmark and raise money for community causes.
