Essential Hiking Safety Tips for West Virginia Trails

by Alice

As more people venture into the stunning wilderness of West Virginia, it’s crucial to prioritize safety while hiking.

Whether you’re exploring a short path like Pendleton Point Overlook Walking Path at Blackwater Falls State Park or tackling a longer route such as the Allegheny Trail, keeping safety in mind is key.

Dave Bieri, District Supervisor for New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, emphasizes that careful planning is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your hiking companions.

“Before you go, let someone know exactly where you’re headed — which trail in the park, and when you expect to return. That way, if something goes wrong, rescuers know where to search. Saying you’re just at New River Gorge isn’t enough because the park has over a hundred miles of trails, making it very hard to locate someone. The more detailed information you leave with someone at home, the better,” Bieri explained.

He also recommends checking in with a park ranger before your hike and asking about trail conditions.

Some trails may be short but physically demanding, and certain paths should be avoided during wet weather.

Another important, though sometimes overlooked, tip is to stay well hydrated. “Make sure to drink water before starting your hike so you’re not dehydrated at the outset. Bring water and snacks to keep your energy up throughout the hike,” Bieri advised.

Lastly, he stressed the importance of staying on marked trails. Leaving the trail can lead to encounters with snakes or poison ivy, and increases the risk of getting lost.

Following these guidelines will help ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience in West Virginia’s beautiful outdoors.
