The NSW Nationals have initiated a formal ePetition to challenge the Minns Labor Government’s plan to sharply raise camping fees in National Parks throughout NSW.
Partnering with Michael Atkinson, known as ‘Outback Mike,’ the Nationals are bringing the petition to Parliament amid worries that fees in some parks could surge by up to 600 percent.
Kevin Anderson, Shadow Minister for Tourism, warned that the fee hikes would effectively place some of the state’s most cherished natural sites behind a costly barrier during a time when families are already struggling with the cost of living.
“When I questioned the Minister for Tourism about this during Question Time last month, he declined to address the issue, even though it will heavily impact tourism by discouraging camping in our National Parks,” Mr Anderson said.
He urged the Minns Labor Government to reconsider and find alternatives to cut costs without burdening hardworking families who simply want to enjoy nature.
Nationals MLC Scott Barrett, who presented the petition, emphasized the importance of keeping National Parks affordable and accessible for all.
“This proposal will make camping unaffordable for many families, which is why supporting Outback Mike’s petition is so important,” Mr Barrett said.
“Some of my best family memories have been made in our iconic National Parks. It’s frustrating to think that others could be denied those experiences because of cost.”
‘Outback Mike,’ renowned for his survival skills and wilderness adventure videos, has voiced his concerns on social media and is encouraging the public to sign the ePetition.
“We want to collect as many signatures as possible to demonstrate to the government how much we value our National Parks. Everyone should be able to access these natural wonders regardless of their financial means,” Mr Atkinson said.
“This decision will impact all of us and future generations. If these fee hikes proceed, they are unlikely to be reversed.”
The ePetition also urges the Minns Labor Government to adequately fund National Parks without imposing new user fees and to increase campsite availability to meet visitor demand.
