Two campers were discovered dead Sunday on a remote island in the middle of Lake Superior, within Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park, according to authorities.
The National Park Service (NPS) reported on Tuesday that rangers were alerted around 4 p.m. to the deaths at a backcountry campground. Two rangers responded by hiking approximately 11 miles overnight to the site and arrived early Monday morning. Upon arrival, they confirmed both fatalities.
The identities of the deceased campers and their causes of death have not yet been determined, the NPS said.
Additional personnel, including both ground teams and aviation units, arrived at the site on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
No further details have been released at this time.
Isle Royale National Park, located in Lake Superior, is only accessible via ferry, seaplane, or private watercraft. The remote park is popular with backpackers, hikers, paddlers, boaters, and divers. Due to extreme weather conditions, it remains closed from November 1 through April 15 each year.
