Toronto has opened 15 outdoor pools earlier than usual to help residents cope with the rising summer temperatures. This move comes as part of the city’s broader effort to respond to climate change and improve public access to cooling amenities.
Mayor Olivia Chow officially launched the early pool season with a visit to one of the newly opened pools on Friday. The early opening is supported by an investment of nearly $2 million in the City’s 2025 budget, aimed at improving the accessibility of recreational facilities during hotter months. Mayor Chow expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, emphasizing the importance of providing residents with more ways to stay cool during the summer heat.
Fifteen pools, including locations such as Christie Pits Park’s Alex Duff Memorial Pool, Alexandra Park, and the Sunnyside Gus Ryder Outdoor Pool, are now open to the public. Other facilities include those at Broadlands Community Recreation Centre, Donald D. Summerville Olympic Pools, McGregor Park Community Centre, and Riverdale Park East. All remaining city-run outdoor pools—totaling more than 50—are expected to be operational by the end of June. Full hours of service will be in place by Friday, June 27.
In addition to pools, select wading pools will begin opening on weekends starting June 14. Notable early-access sites include Dufferin Grove Park, High Park, and Kew Gardens. Meanwhile, splash pads throughout the city are already operating daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will continue until mid-September.

This expanded access aims to make Toronto’s public spaces more enjoyable and safer during the summer, especially as extreme weather becomes more common.
