North Carolina Bill Could Erase Camping World Flag Fines

by Alice

A high-profile flag dispute between Camping World and the city of Greenville, North Carolina, may soon be resolved if a new state law passes. The conflict, which centers on a massive American flag flying over a Camping World dealership, has drawn attention from state lawmakers who are now proposing legislation that could render local regulations unenforceable.

The issue began in Greenville, where city officials have been battling the RV dealer over the oversized flag that flies above its Evans Street location. Measuring about 3,200 square feet—roughly the size of a basketball court—the flag violates the city’s local codes. As a result, Greenville has been issuing daily fines since January, and by the end of May, the penalties had reached $21,700.

However, lawmakers in Raleigh are now taking steps to change the rules. This week, during a committee meeting, legislators added new language to House Bill 926, also known as the Regulatory Reform Act of 2025. The amendment would prevent cities from banning the display of U.S. or North Carolina flags on private property, regardless of their size or the height of the flagpole.

Under the proposed law, municipalities could only intervene if the flag or pole poses a clear health or safety risk. In cases involving traffic concerns, the decision would fall to the state Department of Transportation. Representative Allen Chesser of Nash County is leading the push for the bill, although none of its sponsors represent Pitt County, where Greenville is located.

The flag was first raised by Camping World in October, and the city has maintained that it will continue to fine the business as long as the flag remains. But if the proposed law is approved, it would override Greenville’s local ordinances. This would eliminate all pending fines, lawsuits, and other penalties associated with the display of the flag, effectively ending the months-long legal standoff.
