Two hikers in the Krkonoše Mountains of northeastern Czech Republic unexpectedly uncovered a treasure trove worth thousands, possibly even millions of dollars, leaving experts puzzled.
While walking along a trail in February, the pair noticed an aluminum box embedded in a rocky wall. Their curiosity led them to open the box, revealing 15 pounds of valuables, including ten bracelets, 16 cigar cases, a powder compact, a comb, a chain with a key, and 598 gold coins.
Choosing to remain anonymous, the hikers responsibly handed over the treasure to the Museum of Eastern Bohemia for further examination.
The treasure’s full value is still being assessed, as two cigar cases remain unopened. According to museum expert Vojtěch Brádle, the gold coins alone—weighing 8.16 pounds—have a metal value estimated at around $360,000, as reported by CNN.
Experts are intrigued but baffled by the find, particularly regarding its age. A coin dated 1921 offers some clues, but the absence of local coins among the collection deepens the mystery.
The treasure’s origin remains speculative, with local rumors suggesting connections to wealthy families from the area.
Once fully appraised, the collection will be preserved and exhibited at the museum. The hikers are set to receive a reward based on the treasure’s total value, CNN noted.
In an interesting parallel, just 12 hours after a mysterious treasure map appeared online, a San Francisco treasure hunter uncovered $10,000 worth of loot in a metal chest containing cash, metal ingots, and rare baseball cards. The “pirates” who hid the treasure revealed that the finder was a “value investor & tech guy from Europe.”
