A group of seven determined cyclists, supported by a dedicated crew, have successfully completed an extraordinary 900-mile cycling journey across Europe in support of Wakefield Hospice. Their route spanned nine countries in nine days, showcasing an inspiring display of endurance and unity as they rode to raise funds for vital hospice refurbishment work.
The team began their journey on Thursday, May 22, setting off from Wakefield Hospice and traveling through England, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, France, Germany, and Switzerland before reaching their final destination in Italy. Along the way, they conquered over 30,000 feet of elevation across mountains and challenging terrain, enduring harsh weather conditions ranging from heavy rain to blistering heat.
Helen Mack, former Director of Income Generation at Wakefield Hospice and a member of the support team, reflected on the monumental experience. She described the ride as an unforgettable adventure, celebrating the resilience of the cyclists who braved extreme weather and difficult climbs, including the formidable Alps. Despite mechanical setbacks like punctured tires and worn chains, the team pressed on through 39-degree temperatures to arrive triumphantly in Milan.
Mack highlighted the immense support they received throughout the journey, noting how messages of encouragement and generous donations provided a powerful source of motivation. Every contribution, she said, pushed the team closer to their goal and made a meaningful difference.
So far, the cycling challenge has raised an impressive £15,000 for Wakefield Hospice, including Gift Aid, with donations continuing to come in. The funds will contribute to important refurbishment efforts that enhance care for local patients and their families.
Theresa Barrett, Head of Fundraising at Wakefield Hospice, praised the team’s incredible achievement and their unwavering commitment to the cause. She emphasized the emotional and physical demands of the challenge and expressed her gratitude to all those involved. Barrett noted how social media updates offered supporters a personal glimpse into the riders’ journey, showcasing both the trials and triumphs they faced each day.
The successful completion of the “9 in 9 Challenge” not only marks a remarkable physical feat but also a powerful act of community support and generosity. For the cyclists, their supporters, and Wakefield Hospice, this ride is sure to remain a cherished memory and a testament to the strength of collective determination.
