Kate Courtney Launches New Grant to Empower U23 Female Off-Road Cyclists

by Alice

Kate Courtney, XCO World Champion and one of the most accomplished figures in American mountain biking, has launched a new initiative to support the next generation of female riders. The 2025 Strava x She Sends Foundation “Strive for More” Grant Program is designed specifically for young women aged 19 to 22 who are pursuing a future in off-road cycling. The program addresses the financial and logistical hurdles that often prevent emerging talent from transitioning from grassroots racing to elite competition.

Although Courtney is celebrated for her achievements in the World Cup XCO discipline, the grant is not limited to cross-country riders. It is open to all young women involved in off-road cycling, whether they aim to compete on the UCI World Cup circuit or aspire to tackle major freeride events like Red Bull Rampage. The goal is to provide broader access and opportunity for riders from all disciplines to pursue their ambitions at the highest level.

Courtney, who is also the founder of the She Sends Foundation, emphasized the importance of support in competitive growth. “Every next level of competition demands a next level of support,” she said. “With women’s cycling on the rise, there’s a vibrant pipeline of young athletes dreaming of reaching that top tier. We are grateful for the chance to work with Strava to help fuel those ambitions and bridge the gap between junior and elite competition. We hope these grants will encourage the next generation of female off-road cyclists to aim high and send it.”

The grant program goes beyond financial assistance. Selected recipients will receive mentorship from experienced athletes and advocates in the cycling community. In return, recipients will be expected to give back by leading local girls’ rides or participating in youth cycling initiatives in their areas. This emphasis on community impact aligns with the program’s broader mission to strengthen the support network for women in the sport.

To qualify, applicants must identify as female, be legal residents of the United States, and meet U23 eligibility requirements according to USA Cycling guidelines, meaning they must be born between 2003 and 2006. Applications will be accepted from June 9 through June 23, 2025. Final decisions will be made in July by the She Sends Foundation’s board and advisory team, who will evaluate candidates based on passion, potential, and their plans for contributing to their communities.

Courtney founded the She Sends Foundation to build sustainable, inclusive pathways for women in cycling. With Strava as a key partner, the “Strive for More” program marks a significant step toward leveling the playing field and giving aspiring female athletes the tools they need to thrive.
