An 18-year-old from Lewiston, Idaho, tragically lost his life after a boulder fell on him during a camping trip. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 7, at approximately 9:35 p.m. local time, about a mile down Northfork Drive in Ahsahka.
The Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, where they found Sheldon Medford pinned beneath a large boulder. Emergency personnel confirmed that Medford had died at the scene. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
The loss has left Medford’s family and community in deep mourning. A relative, Ariel Sackett, described the accident as both “tragic” and “sudden,” noting the profound impact it has had on those who knew and loved him. In a statement posted on a GoFundMe page created to support the family, Sackett shared memories of Medford’s vibrant personality and his love for nature.
“Sheldon touched so many throughout his life with his loving heart, kindness, laughter and love for the outdoors,” Sackett wrote. She went on to portray him as more than a son or brother—he was also a best friend, a partner in crime, a free spirit, and a constant source of joy and silliness.
The family is planning to hold a celebration of life in Medford’s memory, although no specific date has been announced yet.
