A significant charity cycling event, the Starley Sportive, will see around 300 riders cycling through Alcester to raise money for a variety of worthy causes.
Now in its 12th year, the event is scheduled for Sunday, September 21. Riders of all ages and skill levels will choose from three routes through the countryside, with the longest route passing through Alcester on its way to Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
Funds raised will support several charities. Alongside longtime partners Zöe’s Place Baby Hospice Coventry and University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, this year’s new beneficiary is Nuneaton BMX Club.
The proceeds will help resurface the BMX club’s track, which serves young people from diverse backgrounds, including those with special needs.
Andy McCoy, chairman of Nuneaton BMX Club, said, “Nuneaton BMX Club offers fantastic opportunities for youngsters to get active on their bikes. It also provides real social value, helping improve life chances for kids facing challenges at school or home.”
Organised by Coventry Road Club and the Deeley Group, the Starley Sportive has raised over £70,000 for its selected charities over the years.
Ian Court, general secretary of Coventry Road Club, commented, “The Starley Sportive raises awareness of the bicycle’s origins and Coventry’s key role in cycling history. The Starley family’s inventions, like the penny-farthing and the differential gear, not only increased participation but made cycling safer. Their story reflects that of Nuneaton BMX Club, which enriches young riders’ lives.”
Edward Hudson from the Deeley Group added, “We hope hundreds will come out again this year to support the event.”
Those interested in participating can register via the Starley Sportive website.
