Sun Peaks Resort is officially launching its summer season this weekend, welcoming outdoor enthusiasts for mountain biking, hiking, and disc golf adventures.
Starting Saturday, June 14 at 10 a.m., the resort will open a range of early-season mountain bike and hiking trails, along with its mid-mountain nine-hole disc golf course. Visitors will also have access to the chair lift to explore the alpine terrain.
According to Christina Antoniak of Sun Peaks Resort, this opening weekend offers a great chance for locals to experience the trails before the resort’s summer event calendar gets into full swing.
Approximately 28 of the resort’s 42 mountain bike trails will be available on Tod Mountain and Sundance Mountain. Trail conditions and availability are being updated in real time on the resort’s website. In addition, the resort’s Progression Park will be open, offering beginner mountain bikers a safe area to practice their skills. Trails on Mount Morrisey, managed by the Sun Peaks Recreational Trail Association, will also be accessible for those who prefer pedal-powered routes.
To mark the occasion, Sun Peaks is hosting a Lift and Lager event at Masa’s Bar and Grill on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Guests with a lift ticket or season pass will receive a complimentary Granville Island Brewing beer or a non-alcoholic beverage.
Season pass holders will also enjoy an exclusive preview day on Friday, June 13, featuring a pre-ride and pre-hike session from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a barbecue at Sunburst Lodge from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The popular Locals Days program is also returning this year. Residents living within 70 kilometres of Sun Peaks can enjoy evening lift access for just $35 on July 17, July 31, and August 7. Proceeds will benefit local mountain biking organizations, including the Sun Peaks Recreational Trail Association, Kamloops Bike Riders Association, and Kamloops Mountain Bike Trail Association. Only 100 tickets are available for each date, and if they sell out, the resort will contribute an additional $500 to the fundraising total.
“It’s great to come up from work and do some laps in the evening,” Antoniak noted, highlighting the community spirit of the initiative.
This summer also features two major downhill mountain biking competitions. From July 18 to 20, Sun Peaks will host the Dunbar Series Canada Cup, expected to attract over 300 athletes. Then, from July 25 to 27, the resort will welcome more than 400 riders for the National Downhill Championships.
To wrap up the season, Sun Peaks will hold a Junior Downhill Championship during Labour Day weekend as part of the annual Peaks Pedal Fest celebration.
With a mix of community events, world-class competitions, and trail access for all skill levels, Sun Peaks Resort is set for a vibrant and adventure-filled summer.
